4 of our young people and 3 of their parents recently thoroughly enjoyed a weekend residential at Bendrigg Lodge in the Lake District.Arriving on Friday afternoon we had to make our beds before a welcome chat with our hosts. After a delicious lamb hotpot and fruit crumble and ice cream we headed off in our groups to the indoor cave complete with cavers helmet with light. Next we could choose from the sensory room for a chill out or the games room to take part in a game of table tennis, basketball, badminton, indoor curling. After all that exercise it was back to the lounge for hot chocolate and biscuits. Most of the children were tired and started to wander off to their rooms. Some of the adults stayed up longer and got to know each other. Drinks are avaiable at all times.
Everyone was up bright and early on Saturday morning and were greeted by a lovely sunny morning and enough rabbits on the front grass to film a remake of watership down. The grounds of the lodge are a haven for wildlife with some deer being spotted by the early birds, it is also surrounded by farms. After a hearty breakfast (fill your boots) the groups went off to their structured activities. Our group were on the climbing wall first with some abseiling to bring us back down to earth. After lunch of some soup and a sandwich we were off to the canal for a spot of canoeing, we stopped half way for a hot drink and a snack before we played fruit salad on the canoes (changing places with people in different boats) we then had a leisurely row back that was interrupted by a male swan looking after his mate on its nest. On return to the lodge it was chill out time and a catch up with each other to see how their day had been. Roast chicken dinner for tea then trifle for dessert. Time to get changed for the disco which was enjoyed by all even the failure of the sound system didn’t stop everyone as they just started singing. Hot chocolate to finish off the evening and off to bed for the very tired children.
Sunday morning and another lovely day, not too many early birds but very eager children to see what today had in store for them. After another hearty breakfast we went off on our merry way. First up for our group was archery. Everyone had a go then we played noughts and crosses archery style, next up for us was the zip wire and the chance to be superman. After another brilliant lunch it was time for the mega slide and it lives up to its name. Everyone met in the lounge to receive their certificates to say they had survived the weekend and then it was time to say their goodbyes.
If you are looking to be adventurous and treat the inner child in you then this is the place for you, for children it is a world of magic, excitement, new friendships, adventure and fun. Go on, give it a go, you know you want to.
